Bordeaux was pre-destined to produce the world’s greatest wines - naturally. With 113,384 hectares of AOC vines, it is five times bigger than Beaujolais and there are marginally more vines in Bordeaux than in all of Australia. It has an ideal climate, moderated by the Gulf Stream, tempered by the Atlantic, with the Landes forest providing a natural wind break to protect the vineyards. The great diversity of microclimates and soils from clay to gravel, chalk and limestone suit Bordeaux’s different grape varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle.
The Bordeaux Blend . . . The richness of Bordeaux wines is the result of a subtle blending of these different grape varieties, combined with local skills, centuries of experience and ongoing research by oenologists (wine scientists) and technicians. The blending of different grape varieties ensures that each wine has a flavour and bouquet unique to itself and to Bordeaux.
Wines For All Tastes . . . Thanks to its scale and diversity, Bordeaux produces wines for every taste, every mood and every budget. From first growth wines to small châteaux and top brand names, from dry white to sweet white, red and rosé . . . The Choice is Yours!
DID YOU KNOW? . . . The standard Bordeaux wine barrel or “barrique”, holds 225 litres . . . There are just 50 Calories in a 70ml glass of Bordeaux - the same as an apple . . . The word Château signifies a wine-producing estate with its own buildings. It is synonymous with the French words domaine and clos but has no connection with any architectural use of the word . . . The English word Claret refers to dry red Bordeaux wines. There is a Bordeaux-Clairet appellation. These wines are slightly darker than the rosé ones . . . Bordeaux produces a sparkling dry wine called Crémant de Bordeaux . . .
There is no overall classification that ranks the various Bordeaux wine appellations however, a number of appellations have their own internal classification . . . The term “growth” or “Cru” as in Cru Classé means the wine has been classified by an appellation. Generally the higher the classification the higher the price . . . Some wine estates, concerned with quality, make a distinction according to the age of the vines, variations in soil etc, in order to produce a first wine that will age well and a second wine that can be enjoyed sooner . . . Two thirds of Bordeaux wines are red and one third are white . . . Ireland has been drinking Bordeaux wine since the 12th Century!
