Chateau Du Tertre

Grand Cru Classe Du Medoc - 2009

Flowering took place from 28 May to 4 June, under perfect conditions and resulted in an even formation of the nascent bunches. At the other end of the season, there was hardly even one day of rain during the harvest, which took place from 28 September to 13 October. All in all, the climate was exceptional, and resulted in a richness in polyphenols that was equally exceptional.

The first indicators of maturity were taken at the beginning of September, and showed high concentrations of sugar, acidity and high quality tannins. A perfect balance. Thanks to the sunshine, that lasted throughout September, together with the hot and windy climate, the berries not only reached their full quality potential, but were also richly concentrated. The Cabernet Sauvignons were sweet to the taste right from the moment of veraison.

The intense colour of this vintage is associated with this rich concentration, enabling also an easy extraction of anthocyanins and tannins. All of this was evident from the initial vatting of the wine, when the juice took on a deep and intense colour very quickly. The quality of the tannins is equally impressive: at the same time clearly present, but perfectly ripe, silky and gourmet.

It's highly unusual to have years where both the Cabernet Franc and the Petit Verdot do so well. But in 2009, the old vine Cabernet Franc shows a great depth of fruit. Equally, the Petit Verdot is exceptional in this vintage, both fleshy, well structured, and pure, with an intense expression of gourmet fruit and a wonderful tannic structure that is both impressive and long-lasting. Their impact on the final blend is clearly evident, and they add both structure and complexity to the wine.

wineBarrelsCellarThe 2009 vintage at Chateau Du Tertre also marks the first real forays into a biodynamic viticulture at the heart of the estate. We are very encouraged by the initial results, and the plots of vines that were farmed biodynamically showed perfect health right through to the moment of picking. We intend to enlarge the vineyard area following this philosophy of viticulture even further with the coming vintages.

The 2009 vintage shows the most intense colour of recent years, with a perfect balance. and shows all the characteristics of a truly great wine.

Blend of the First wine: Cabernet Sauvignon 55%, Merlot 22%, Cabernet Franc 15%, Petit Verdot 8%,

Yield: approx 33 hl/ha
